Schematic letters, logic: the schematic letters F, G, H ... stand in logical formulas for properties, in contrast to the variables x, y, z ..., which represent objects to which properties are attributed. E.g. (Ex) (Fx) "There is an F". Properties cannot be quantified over in first order logic. That is, it is impossible to express what number of properties belong to an object. Quine's fourth syntactical insight is introducing a predicate with schema letters.

Problem: E.g. Each sentence or its opposite is true - that must not be: (Each sentence is true) or (each sentence is wrong).
Solution: F () is then __ or __ s opposite is true.
Geach: subordinate clauses (relative clauses) and pronouns are not mere substitutes.
This is actually a bug in modern logic books.
